Learn Critical Thinking!

Critical Thinking Makes You Smarter!

A new skill for the new year that would be great to have is critical thinking! With this skill not only will you be able to discuss or debate your friends better but maybe even help them understand their position better.

What is critical thinking?

According to Barry K. Beyer (1995), critical thinking means making clear, reasoned judgments.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_thinking)

The National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking defines critical thinking as the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. (ibid)

Each of these definitions emphasizes gathering of facts to support one’s position.

Facts differ from opinion, because facts can be demonstrated to be true no matter who is presenting them. Where as opinion is totally generated from the mind of the individual or group diseminating them.

What is a fact?

A fact is something that can be checked and backed up with evidence, e.g. in 2010, Lionel Messi was named FIFA World Footballer of The Year. We can check these details by looking at FiFA records. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/factsheet/en06opin-l1-f-what-is-fact-and-opinion)

What is an opinion?

An opinion is based on a belief or view. It is NOT based on evidence that can be checked, e.g. Wayne Rooney is the best football player in the English Premier League. Some people might think there are other players in the English Premier league who are better than Wayne Rooney. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/factsheet/en06opin-l1-f-what-is-fact-and-opinion)
